One day at Studio

Welcome to our studio. Let's see what we are up to today. We are working on tea containers.

They are rabbit-shaped tea containers, so we are making rabbit ears. They are all hand-carved.

The ears will be put like this. In the back, you can see a drawing of a rabbit which our artist used as a model.

For the rims, by adjusting the thickness of urushi and mixing shell powder in urushi, they finally fit perfectly.

On the back of the lids, some patterns will be painted. For that, paper pieces have been cut. But today, we are working on different parts.

The powder is made by griding seashells.

On the work table, you can see urushi, the brown liquid.

Applying urushi where you want to glue shell powder...

Applying urushi on the rabbit's mouth...

You sprinkle the shell powder, and it sticks where you applied urushi.

The same process is repeated to the amount of the tea containers.

After finishing today's work, those tools need to be cleaned. In the same way as oil painting, we use oil to clean the brushes after painting urushi.

To prevent from sticking, we clean brushes from their roots, using special paddle.

To dry urushi, we put them in a humidified box. Around 80% of humiditiy activate one of the components of urushi, laccase.

We will wait until tomorrow for the parts we worked on to get dry.

Good night. Dry well.
